Edellisessä tekstissä kerroin toiveistani alkaneelle vuodelle. Halusin uuden alun, joten noiden toiveiden toteutumisesta kerron nyt *täällä*. Toivotan sinut lämpimästi tervetulleeksi! Jos taas haluat sanoa hyvästit, kiitän sinua sydämellisesti, että olit täällä mukana.

In my last post I was describing my hopes for this year. I wanted to have a fresh start, so I decided to pursue those dreams *here*. You are most welcome to tag along! But if you'd like to say goodbye instead, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being here with me.

... että matkailisimme vähän useammin. Vaikkei edes kaukana, mutta säännöllisesti.

... että ehtisin nukkua kahdeksan tuntia ennen jokaista työaamua.

... että koko koti saisi uuden ilmeen. Hyvällä alulla ollaan jo.

... että saisin olla terve. Läheiset myös.

... että kehittyisin kaikissa harrastuksissani. Aion harjoitella kovasti.

... että jaksaisin valmistaa kaikki ateriat alusta loppuun itse, leipiä myöten.

(Ensimmäiset vanhalla filmikameralla kuvaamani otokset ovat valmiita! Olin kuin lapsi karkkikaupassa, kun lähdin niitä hakemaan. Tässä niistä viisi, joista erityisesti pidin. Viimeisessä kuvassa on itse kamera. Ihanaa, että joutuu hidastamaan ja odottamaan niiden valmistumista. Kaikkein parasta on, että kuva tulee juuri sellaisena kuin se on otettu. Ei voi karsia pois virheitä eikä hassuja ilmeitä, vaan kaikki näyttää juuri siltä kuin näytti sen yhden sekunnin ajan, kun painoin laukaisinta. Hidastakaa tekin, se on virkistävää!)

...we could get out of town more. If not very far away, at least more often.

... I had time to sleep for eight hours before every workday.

... that our whole house could be redecorated. We have already started.

... I would stay healthy. And all my loved ones as well.

... I could improve my skills with my hobbies. I'm going to practise hard.

... that I was able to cook all meals myself from the very beginning to the end, including the bread.

(The first pictures taken with an old film camera finally arrived! I felt like a kid in a candy store when I picked them up. Here's five of them, the ones I liked most. The last photo is of the camera itself. I love the fact I have to slow down and wait for them to be developed. The best thing is that you get the picture precisely the way it was taken. You can't fix mistakes or delete funny faces, everything looks exactly the way it looked for that one second when you released the shutter. You should slow down, too - it's refreshing!)

Luonnossa - 2011 - In the nature

En juurikaan *matkustellut* viime vuonna, mutta luonnossa vietin paljon aikaa.
Although there weren't a lot of *travelling* last year, I did spend a lot of time outside.

Tammikuussa oli kylmää ja hämärää, mutta kaunista.
In January it was cold and shady, but quite beautiful.

Helmikuussa oli paljon lunta ja innostuimme hiihtämisestä toden teolla.
In February we had plenty of snow and got really excited about skiing.

Maaliskuussa koin yhden elämäni visuaalisesti kauneimmista hetkistä. Lisää *täällä*.
In March I had one of the most visually beautiful moments of my life. See *here*.

Huhtikuu vei viimeisetkin lumet mennessään. Välillä oli jo lämmin.
April took the last of our snow and there were some warm days already.

Toukokuussa mökkeilemässä. Lähemmäksi luontoa ei pääse.
In May we had the rental cottage. You can't get much closer to nature.

In *June* we were bicycling a lot.

Elokuussakin oli vielä niin lämmintä, että koirat vietiin usein vilvoittelemaan.
It was still quite warm in August, so we took the dogs out for a swim a lot.

Syyskuun kaikki luontokuvat ovat kännykästä. Olimme jatkuvasti *metsällä*. Ihanaa!
All of my September nature shots are from my cellphone. We spent a lot of time *on the hunts*. I loved it!

Ei kerrassaan yhtään luontokuvaa lokakuulta. Koko kuukausi meni häissä, syntymäpäivillä, valmistujaisissa ja muissa tapahtumissa.

No nature pictures from October, none whatsoever. The whole month was filled with weddings, birthdays, graduation parties and other events.

Marraskuussa joen pinnalla nähtiin jo jäätä.

In November we had the first frost on the river.

Joulukuussa palloteltiin edestakaisin lumen ja vihreän nurmen välillä.

December was all about going back and forth with snow and grass.

Retket - 2011 - On the move

Alkuvuonna 2011 vietimme viikonlopun Oulussa. Ilma oli jäätävän kylmää, ruoka syntisen hyvää ja seura mitä mainiointa. Lisää reissusta *täällä* ja *täällä*.
In the beginning of 2011 we spent a weekend in Oulu. The weather was freezing cold, the food was to die for and the company the best there can be. More about our trip *here* and *here*.

Hääpäivänämme yllätin mieheni vuokraamalla salaa mökin järven rannalta. Lähes koko viikonlopun satoi vettä, mutta ei se haitannut. Lisää *täällä*, *täällä* ja *täällä*.
On our wedding day I surprised my husband by renting a cottage by a lake. It rained almost through all weekend but we didn't mind. More *here*, *here* and *here*.

Nämä pienet retket olivat ainoat pakomatkat paikkakunnaltamme vuonna 2011. Kunpa tänä vuonna ei olisi niin hankalaa saada yhtä aikaa vapaata töistä, tai löytää karvakuonoille hoitaja jos heitä ei voi ottaa mukaan. Kolme viikonloppua koko vuodesta on aika vähän!
These little getaways were the only ones we had out of town in the year 2011. I hope this year it wouldn't be so hard to get some time off work at the same time, and find someone to take care of our much loved dogs if we can't take them along. Three weekends in a year is not a lot, if you ask me!

Melkein - Almost

Talvihuoneen sisustusprojektini on melkein vauhdissa, melkein...
Olen melkein seitsemännessä taivaassa, kun vihdoin löysin kameraani oikean pariston.
Mieheni on melkein hyväksynyt, että ensi vuonna on kiellettyä syödä minun valmistamaani ruokaa TV:n ääressä.
Loma on melkein lopussa, ja melkein tuntuu, että voisikin mennä jo töihin.

Asiaa ei helpota se, että tiet ovat peilikirkkaat ja ulkona on myrskynnyt pari päivää. On niin ihanan helppoa käpertyä sohvannurkkaan ja maistaa pala suklaata, tai ehkä kaksi.

I'm telling you, I have had too much to eat. The traditional Finnish Christmas foods are already banned in this house but I feel too full even after having a salad. As we've had two days of major winter storms and the roads have been dangerously slippery, it's been too easy to just sit back and have a bite of chocolate.

Puikoilla on edelleen jotain, jonka olisi pitänyt valmistua jo jouluksi. Vesisade on vienyt melkein kaiken lumen ja ihmiset sipsuttelevat jäykkinä jäisillä teillä. Sytytin takkaan tulen heti aamulla ja kuuntelin myrskytuulta. Toivoin, että tulisi sähkökatkos. Puoliltapäivin taivaskin leimahti liekkeihin. Lumousta kestää vain pari tuntia, kohta on taas pimeää. Mieleni on valoisa. Vein *Kivaranmummulle* joululahjaksi *Pikkuruisen Tarinan* kansiin sidottuna, ja sain kuulla sata tarinaa lisää hänen selatessaan kirjan sivuja.

I'm still knitting something that should have been ready by Christmas. The rain has taken almost all of our snow and people are tip-toeing on the icy roads. I set a fire to the fireplace early in the morning and listened to the stormy wind. I was hoping the electricity would shut down just for a little while. At noon the sky lights up as well. It only lasts for a couple of hours, soon it will be dark again. I'm feeling cheerful. I took the *Tiny little story* to my *Grandma* as a Christmas present, and she told me a hundred more while going through the pictures.

Viimein alkaa ihan oikeasti näyttää täälläkin joululta. Ja tuntua, sillä tänään oli viimeinen työpäivä tälle vuodelle. Kalenterin eilinen luukku jäi väliin, koska kiirehdin ihanien työkavereideni lahjoja valmiiksi. Aika hauskoja, vai mitä? Leikkaat vain käytöstä poistetun paidan hihat oikean mittaisiksi (sovita viinipullolle), ompele pohjasauma ja tarvittaessa kavenna sivuista, sekä solmi kaulalle kravatti silkkinauhasta tai erikseen ompelemastasi kangassuikaleesta. Täytä saajan lempiviinillä. Kierrätys ei tästä paljon helpommaksi muutu!

It's finally starting to look like Christmas in our household. And feel like it, too - today was my last day at work for this year. I missed a post yesterday as I was busy finishing up these Christmas presents for my dear workmates. Fun, aren't they? Just take a used shirt, cut off the sleeves (measure them to fit a wine bottle), sew the bottom seam and narrow it down on the sides if necessary. Make a tie of silk ribbon. Fill with the receiver's favorite wine. Recycling doesn't get any easier than this!

The only colorful Christmas light in our home this year is this one. I found the crystal lampshade at a flea market for seven Euros. The color changing lightbulb I found on sale for eight. Usually I stay far away from anything flashing, bright, too decorational and bling, meaning just like this. But this one I adore. It's not over the top, is it..?

Joulusiivous alkaa näillä näppäimillä (onkohan se kiellettyä näin adventtina), moni joululahjoista vielä tekemättä (kyllä, aion ehtiä itse tehdä) ja päivän vesisade mahtaa sulattaa loput lumetkin. Showing you pictures from carefully chosen details in our home might make you think that the Christmas spirit has already taken us over. Well let me tell you a secret. I cheated. Everything is absolutely non-Christmassy at the moment. I am just about to start a huge clean-up operation (I wonder if it's forbidden on an advent?), some of the gifts are yet to be made (yes, I'm keeping up hope to still make them myself and on time) and the rain is about to melt whatever snow we have left. Only few more nights to Christmas - that is if I get everything done in time. Are you guys way ahead of me already??

I very much like giving people presents. Well, I don't like the figuring-out-what-to-get-everyone-part, but wrapping them up is a lot of fun. And the feeling when you sometimes know you've found something perfect for someone. Although it may sound selfish, it's also nice to give yourself a gift every now and then. Pari vuotta sitten ostin itselleni joululahjan. Elämäni ensimmäisen tosi hyvän kameran. Nyt kun olen digitaalisilla kuvilla leikkinyt kaksi vuotta, tunsin tarvetta palata muutaman askeleen taaksepäin. Vuonna 1996, kun kävin Teksasissa, ostin Polaroid-kameran ja äskettäin *Anna* vinkkasi, että nykyään siihen saa taas filmiä. Tilasin sitä siis heti, joululahjakseni tietenkin! Ensimmäisen kuvani otin talomme edessä olevista kuusenoksista, joihin juuri oli satanut ensilunta.

A couple of years ago I bought myself a Christmas present. My first really good camera. Now that I've been playing with digital photos for two years, I felt the need to take a few steps back. Back in 1996 when I spent a while in Texas, I bought a Polaroid camera. Recently *Anna* told me they are making films for instant cameras again. I ordered it online right away, as a Christmas present of course! I took my very first picture of the spruce branches in front of our house, right after we had had our first snow for this winter.

Kivoihin pakettikortteihin tarvitset kartonkia, sanomalehden sivun, valkoista paperia, kynttilän, vesiväriä, liimaa, sakset, lahjanauhaa tai narua.
1. Piirrä valkoiselle paperille kynttilällä kuvioita tai kirjoita siihen saajan nimi. Maalaa kuvioiden päälle vesiväreillä ja anna kuivua hetki.
2. Kuvioiden kuivuessa leikkaa kartongista haluamasi kokoiset kortit. Revi sanomalehdestä hieman pienemmät palat ja liimaa ne kortteihin.
3. Leikkaa kuviosaksilla (tai revi käsin) kynttilällä piirtämäsi kuviot irti. Niiden tulisi olla liimaamiasi sanomalehden palasia pienemmät. Liimaa kuviot kortteihin sanomalehden päälle. Kääntämällä kuvioita vinoon tai tekemällä niistä eri muotoisia saat kortista elävämmän.
4. Tee kortin reunaan reikä ja pujota siitä lävitse lahjanauha tai naru. Valmis!

To make nice gift tags you need some cardboard, a newspaper page, some white paper, a candle, watercolors, glue, scissors, ribbon or yarn.

1. Draw different kind of items on the white paper with the candle (or perhaps the name of the receiver). Use the watercolors to paint on the drawings and allow to dry for a moment.

2. While they're drying, cut out a couple of tag-size pieces of the cardboard. Rip a bit smaller pieces of the newspaper page and glue them onto the cardboard ones.

3. Cut or rip the candle drawings out of the paper. They should be a little smaller than the newspaper pieces. Glue the drawings on the newspaper. By twisting the drawings a bit, or cutting them out in different shapes makes the tags more fun.

4. Punch a hole through the tag and attach the ribbon or yarn. Done!

Joulu tulee, osa 6 + arvonta - Waiting for Christmas, part 6 + give-away

Jos etsit helppoa ja edullista joululahjaideaa, se on tässä. Paksusta langasta tehtynä kauluri valmistuu yhdessä illassa, etkä tarvitse aiempaa kokemusta virkkaamisesta. Olen liittänyt tähän postaukseen linkit ohjevideoihin, joilla pääset vauhtiin!

Tarvitset lankaa ja virkkuukoukun (mitä paksummat, sen nopeammin kauluri syntyy), sekä napin, neulan ja ompelulankaa.
1. Tee lankaan aloitussilmukka.
2. Virkkaa "mato" (ketjusilmukoille ohjevideo *täällä*). Se on tarpeeksi pitkä, kun ylettää löyhästi kaulasi ympäri.
3. Käänny virkkaamaan matoa takaisinpäin kiinteillä silmukoilla (kiinteän silmukan ohjevideo *täällä*).
4. Muista aina kerroksen päässä virkata yksi ketjusilmukka ennen kuin käännyt.
5. Jatka kiinteiden silmukoiden virkkaamista,
6. kunnes työ on haluamasi levyinen.
7. Tee työhön reunus. Virkkaa ketjusilmukoita niin, että otat joka neljänteen ketjusilmukkaan langan työn läpi. Siis kolme ketjusilmukkaa, neljännellä otat langan koukulle työn reunasta seuraavasta kiinteästä silmukasta. Tee tällainen ketjusilmukoista muodostuva kaari jokaiseen työn reunassa olevaan kiinteään silmukkaan.
8. Ketjusilmukkareunus pehmentää ja elävöittää työtä.
9. Kiinnitä lopuksi kaulurin toiseen päähän yksi tai useampia nappeja. Varmista, että napit mahtuvat ketjusilmukkakaaren läpi. Valmis!

ARVONTA! Tämän kaulurin tein pehmeästä alpakka-mohair-akryylisekoitteesta. Kontrastiksi lisäsin siihen yhden metallisen napin kiinnitystä varten. Jos haluat kuvassa näkyvän kaulurin omaksesi, jätä tervehdyksesi kommenttilaatikkoon! Kauluri arvotaan ensi sunnuntaina, joulukuun 11. päivänä. Onnea matkaan!

If you are out of Christmas gift ideas, here is one that's both easy and non-expensive. When made of thick yarn, this neckwarmer will be done in just a couple of hours. You don't even need to be experienced in crocheting - I have linked tutorial videos to this post to make it as simple for you as possible!

You will need yarn and a crocheting hook (the thicker these are, the faster the neckwarmer is ready), and a button, a needle and some thread.

1. Tie a knot on the yarn to make a starting stitch.

2. Make "a worm" by crocheting chain stitches (a tutorial video for chain stiches *here*). It is long enough when you can wrap it loosely around your neck.

3. Turn back and start single crochet (in UK it's called double crochet) on the worm (a tutorial video *here*).

4. At the end of each row, remember to crochet one chain stitch before you turn.

5. Keep going with the single crochet rows,

6. until it's wide enough for you.

7. Make a brim. Crochet three chain stitches, then with the 4th chain stitch pick up the yarn through the single crochet stitch on the neckwarmer. Crochet these chain stitch loops on every single crochet stitch.

8. The brim makes the neckwarmer look soft and lively.

9. Finish with a button (or several, if you wish). Make sure the button fits through the chain stitch loops of the brim. You're done!

Viikonloppuna vietimme ystävien kanssa pikkujouluja. Jo toisena vuonna peräkkäin kaikki kynnelle kykenevät kokoontuivat erämökkiin kauas ihmisvilinästä. Iltaa suunniteltiin ja odotettiin viikkoja; kuka tuo kinkun, kuka karkit, kuka musiikin. Saunomista, pelejä, ruokaa, juomaa, hassuja asuja, tanssimista, vedet silmissä nauramista ja ennen kaikkea toinen toistaan mahtavampia ihmisiä.

Ensi vuoden teema on jo valittu. Se on Ruma Villapaita.

Last weekend we had a pre-Christmas party with friends. This was the second year in a row when all of us (or as many as were able to find time in their schedule) gathered together in a cabin, far from anywhere. The night was planned and anxiously waited for weeks ahead; who would bring the ham, or the candy, or the music. Sauna, games, food and drinks, funny costumes, dancing, laughing our eyes out, and enjoying the company of the most amazing people.

We already picked a theme for next year. Ugly Sweater.

Eilen heräsin kurkku kipeänä ja kuumeisena, joten päätin jäädä kotiin pariksi päiväksi. Vaikkei olo ole ihan parhaasta päästä, oli mahtavaa päästä katselemaan (vaikkakin vain ikkunasta) huikean kaunista talvivaloa ja uusia lumihiutaleita. Tiedättekö, lunta satavat pilvet ovat ihan erinäköisiä kuin vesisadepilvet!

Yesterday morning I woke up with a sore throat and fever, so I decided to stay home for a couple of days. Even though I'm not at my best it was great to have a chance to see the amazing winter light and some fresh new snowflakes. You know, the snowy clouds look completely different than the rain clouds!

Vaikka mökin ovea ei ole avattu vuosiin, siellä on asukkaita. Pieniä kivisiä tai neulottuja ukkeleita ja otuksia, jotka pitävät järjestystä yllä. On leppäkerttuja, kärpässieniä, mitä ikinä kuvitella saattaa. Ja mikäli mummuani yhtään tunnen, kaikille heille on syntyessään annettu nimi.

Mökki kertoo tuhat tarinaa. Niitä löytyy ovista, kaapeista ja kaikkialta mihin silmä eksyy. Kaikissa päivämäärä, kaikissa oma tunnelmansa. Vanhimmat on kirjoitettu kymmeniä vuosia sitten, uusimmat 2000-luvulla. On sykähdyttävää, kun huomaa yhtäkkiä olleensa jossain niistä mukana. On myös sanattomia tarinoita; langoista kiedottuja, lehdistä leikattuja, postikortilla tulleita. Muistan vuosien takaa yhden, jota mummu oli kirjoittanut ukkosmyrskyllä. Olisinpa kurkistanut makuukammarin kaappiin, sen täytyy olla siellä.

Täynnä tavallista arkea ovat kaikki nuo tarinat, silti tai juuri siksi korvaamattoman tärkeitä. Huomaisimmepa kaikki, että pikkuruisetkin hetket ovat muistamisen arvoisia. Pian aion käydä Kivisaarella uudestaan, tällä kertaa mummun kanssa. Ja sen tarinan muistan varmasti aina.

Although the front door hasn't been opened in years someone is still living in the cabin. Little men and creatures, made of yarn or stones, are keeping things in order. There are ladybugs, mushrooms, whatever you can think of. And if I know my Grandma at all, they were all given a name when born.

The cabin tells a thousand stories. They are on the doors, inside the cabinets and everywhere you look. All dated, all with their own atmosphere. The oldest written decades ago, the latest in this century. It is heartwarming when you suddenly find yourself in one of them. There are also stories without words; knitted in yarn, cut out of papers, received on postcards. I remember reading one that my Grandma had written during a thunderstorm. I wish I had opened the bedroom closet, it must have been there.

All those stories are full of everyday life, and yet (or because of it), they are priceless. I wish we all realised that even the tiniest moments are worth to remember. I will go back to the Stone Island soon, this time with my Grandma. And that's a story I'll remember for the rest of my life.

Kaukaa, kuin toisesta maailmasta hiipii aavistus äänestä. Oikeastaan se ei ole edes ääntä, vaan vaistomainen tuntemus jalkojen alla. Pientä minua jännittää. Olen pihalla ja juoksen lähemmäs mökkiä, jonka portailla olen riittävän matkan päässä. Ääni vahvistuu hitaasti, kunnes yhtäkkiä kiihtyy sekunneissa huumaavaksi jylinäksi ja kolinaksi. Ohitse menee juna. Tai junia. Kymmeniä, satoja, tuhansia junia näitten vuosikymmenten aikana. Niin lähellä, että näen matkustajien kasvot, vaikka kurkkisin niitä mökin ikkunasta.

Kun olin vielä pieni (mutta tarpeeksi vanha tekemään kepposia) laitoimme pennosia kiskoille. Pari-kolme vain, jotka raaskimme haaskata. Odotimme ja odotimme, kunnes juna tuli taas. Sen mentyä juoksimme radan varteen ja etsimme kiivaasti aarteita. Voi sitä naurua, kun pitkulaiseksi venähtänyt kolikko löytyi! Yhtä pitkäksi venähtivät naamamme, kun aikuiset toruivat hölmöstä leikistä.

Aikuisiällä olen viettänyt mökissä kaksi yötä. Edelleen tuo jännitys kiiri mieleeni, kun heräsin pimeässä mökissä keskellä yötä lähestyvään kuminaan. Ääni sai tavarat helisemään, mutta missään en ole tuntenut oloani yhtä turvalliseksi kuin silloin. Pikkuruisen mökin pikkuruisessa kamarissa vällyjen alla.

From far, so far it seems to come from another world, I hear a sound. Actually, it isn't so much a sound as it is a sence under my feet. The little me is excited and frightened at the same time. I am on the yard and running closer to the cabin stairs, because I know it is a safe place for watching. The sound slowly increases, until it becomes a clacking noise in just a few seconds. A train passes by. Or trains. Dozens, hundreds, thousands of trains during these decades. So close to the cabin I can see the passengers' faces from the window.

When I was still little (but old enough to play tricks) we used to set small coins on the tracks. Just two or three that we were willing to waste. We waited and waited until the train came again. After it was gone, we ran back to the tracks to search for our treasures. Oh, the laughter, when we found the flattened coins again! And oh, the shame, as we were told how silly our game was.

I have spent two nights in the cabin as a grown-up. Even after all these years I still felt the excitement when I woke up to the noise again, in the middle of the night in the dark cabin. The train made the windows shake - yet, I have never felt as safe as I did then. Under the blankets in the tiny little room of the tiny little cabin.

Olen hujan hajan, sikin sokin ajatuksineni ja kiireineni. Yritän pysyä perillä siitä mitä tapahtuu. Tiedän, että täällä blogimaailmassa jossain odotetaan suru-uutisia, jossain selvitään niistä, toisissa on yhtä kiire kuin itsellänikin ja toisissa muistetaan minua kivoilla asioilla. Kiitos, että kerrotte näistä kaikista - ja kiitos, että yhä olette käyneet täällä, vaikka itse olen tiukasti oravanpyörässä.

I've been swept away, once again, with my swirling thoughts and the hours that go by too quickly. I try to keep up with what's going on, though. I know here in the blog world some are waiting for sad news to arrive, some are dealing with them already, some are as busy as myself, and some have remembered me with such sweet gestures. Voi kuinka monta pientä ja suurta jalkaparia tämän mökin lattialla onkaan astellut. Uskon, että jokaisesta syntyneestä muistosta mökki on kasvanut hieman; niin vähän vain, ettei sitä huomaa, mutta niin paljon, että kaikki vieraat ovat sinne aina ongelmitta mahtuneet. Suljen silmät ja näen tuhat asiaa yhtä aikaa.

Juon lasista, jonka kyljessä kasvaa kukkia ja heinää. Amerikka on jättiläisten maa, koska mummun tuoma käpy on niin valtava. Minä olen kynnyksen korkuinen ja katselen hämärästä kamarista mummua, joka kattaa pöytää hehkulampun valossa. Katossa roikkuu joulupallo, ulkona on helle. Käyn pihasaunassa, hiukset pestään sadevedellä. Täältä saa maailman parhaita lättyjä. Serkku nostaa käteeni pienen siilinpoikasen. Mummu näyttää, missä lehmä lypsettiin. Tontin takana laitumella hevosen hampaat ovat kirjavat. Persiljaa saa syödä suoraan kasvimaalta. Tiedän, kenen jalassa nuo kengät ovat olleet. Juna tulee...

I wonder how many big and small pairs of feet have walked on this floor. I believe by each born memory this cabin has grown a little; just an inch so that no-one can notice, but enough to make room for everyone who wants to visit. I close my eyes and see a thousand things.

I'm drinking from a glass with flowers and grass. America is the land of giants, I know it because the pine cone Grandma brought is so huge. I am about knee-high and I'm watching her in the dark, as she is setting the table below the light bulb. There are Christmas decorations hanging from the ceiling, even in the summer. I go to the sauna, my hair is washed with rainwater. The world's best pancakes are made here. My cousin puts a baby hedgehog on my hand. Grandma is showing me where they used to milk the cow. Behind the yard the neighbour's horse has stripes in his teeth. You can eat parsley straight from the vegetable garden. I know who those shoes belong to. The train is coming...

Mökin nimi on Kivisaari, vaikkei sitä ainakaan seinistä huomaa. Heti porstuassa minut vastaanotetaan sateenkaaren väreillä. Tuntuu, etteivät ne ole himmenneet astettakaan vuosikymmenten aikana. Ehkä ne olivat lapsuudessakin yksi syy siihen, että tämä vaatimaton mökki oli aina niin mieluinen. Tai ehkä syynä olivat neliapilat, joita etsittiin pihanurmelta tuntikausia. Tai sitten tuo mökin oma tuoksu, jolla se kertoo olevansa vanha, mutta vielä hengissä.

Joka kerta kun Kivisaarelle tultiin, piti tutkia näitä kaappeja. Aina niistä löytyi pieniä aarteita, joilla leikittiin, kunnes ne palautettiin paikalleen seuraavaa kertaa varten. Enää tässä porstuassa ei ole vanhaa separaattoria, joka niin elävästi kuuluu muistoihini. Sen raskasta kampea pienet kädet pyörittivät olan takaa, kunnes vauhti oli niin hurja, että hurina kuului pihalle asti.

Ajattelen, että matto pitäisi pestä. Kun tartun keltaisen oven punaiseen kahvaan, minua jostain syystä yhtäkkiä kihelmöi. Pelottaa. Ihan kuin mökki yrittäisi säikyttää tunkeilijan tiehensä. Avaan oven ja seison paikallani niin kauan, että tunne menee ohi. Minä olen samaa sukua, minulla on lupa olla täällä, uskothan.

This little place has a name that means Stone Island, although you wouldn't believe it by it's appearance. As soon as I open the front door I am greeted by a rainbow. It feels like the colors haven't faded a bit during all these decades. Perhaps they were one of the reasons I loved visiting this cabin when I was a child. Or perhaps it was the lucky four-leaved clovers that we were searching for on the front yard grass for hours. Or maybe the scent this cabin has; the scent of being old but still alive.

Every time we came to the Stone Island, we just had to go through these little closets. And every time we found little treasures to play with, until it was time to put them back again for the next visit. There used to be an old, heavy separator right beside the front door - a device that was used to separate cream from milk. Little hands grabbed the crank handle and turned it around over and over again, until it was spinning so quickly the noise could be heard on the yard.

I'm thinking the rug needs washing. As I take hold of the red handle on the yellow door, I get shivers. Suddenly I feel afraid. It's as if the cabin were trying to scare an unknown intruder away. I open the door and stand still until the feeling goes away. I am of the same family, I have permission to be here, believe me okay.

Kerran kauan, kauan sitten oli niityillä pikkuruinen mökki. Ja kerran, myös kauan sitten, tuo mökki siirrettiin pikkuruiselle pihalle rautatien varteen. Vuodesta 1946 lähtien siinä asui perhe; mies, vaimo ja kolme pientä tyttöä. Yksi noista tytöistä on hän, jota kutsun äidikseni.

Vähän aikaa sitten minulla kävi mainio tuuri. Voitin blogiarvonnassa, enkä ihan mitä tahansa vaan jotain oikeasti hyödyllistä. *Heidi* lähetti minulle keittokirjan, sekä ihania ylimääräisiä pikku yllätyksiä. Ajatelkaa, että joku todella viitsii nähdä vaivaa kasvattaa puutarhassaan yrttejä, kuivattaa ne, ja lähettää sitten osan minulle maapallon toiselle puolen! Ajatus on herttainen, juuri niin kuin hänkin. Käykää ihmeessä vilkaisemassa Heidin elämänmakuista omaa *blogia*.

Eikä muuten paremmin olisi voinut sattua. Juuri kun valitin, ettei enää ole aikaa valmistaa ruokaa. Nuudelithan pyöräyttää hetkessä!

A while ago there was a give-away on *Heidi's blog* and I was lucky enough to win. She sent me a very useful cookbook and some marvelous little surprises with it. Can you believe someone would grow and dry their own herbs in their own garden, and then be kind enough to send some of them to me to the other side of the world! So sweet, just like Heidi is. Do check out *her blog*, it is full of life and beautiful photos.

Oh, and this couldn't have been better. Just as I was complaining not having enough time to cook proper meals after going back to work again... Noodles will be ready in no time! (Heidi, a little thank you-letter will be on it's way to you shortly!)

Loma lähenee loppuaan. Juuri nyt se ei tunnu kovin pahalta, muttei varsinaisesti hyvältäkään. Oikeastaan se ei tunnu miltään. Pientä haikeutta on ilmassa; ihan kuin joutuisi päästämään irti jostain, jonka näkee uudelleen vasta kuukausien kuluttua. Se jokin on aika. Työ haukkaa kohta taas kymmenen tuntia jokaisesta päivästäni ja joudun laittamaan tärkeysjärjestykseen asiat, jotka on tehtävä, ja joita haluan tehdä.

Seuraavina viikkoina eniten kaipaan varmasti sitä aikaa, joka minulla oli käytettävissä yhteisiin, kiireettömiin hetkiin ruoan ja viinin parissa. Oli aikaa valmistaa aterioita rauhassa alusta loppuun asti, aikaa nauttia mauista ja tuoksuista, aikaa jutella ja istua ulkosalla syömisen jälkeen sen sijaan, että olisi vain pikaisesti tankannut ruumiinsa ja jatkanut tehtäviään tiukan aikataulun puitteissa.

On asialla myös kääntöpuoli. En ole uskaltanut sovittaa farkkuja jalkaani koko loman aikana... enkä taida yrittääkään ennen kuin tasapaino on taas löytynyt.

My summer holiday is coming to an end. I don't exactly feel bad about it but not too good, either. To tell you the truth, I hardly feel anything at all. There is a certain amount of sadness in the air, a feeling of having to let go of something you will have to wait for months to receive again. That something is time. Soon work will once again steal ten hours of my each day and I will have to prioritize the things I have to do and the things I want to.

For the next few weeks I will definitely miss the extra time I had for our moments with good food and wine. Having enough time to prepare full dinners isn't everyday for me. I cherished the moments with my husband, enjoying scents and tastes and being able to just sit and talk outside after supper - I wish we could do that more often instead of just fueling our bodies for the tasks to come.

There is a downside to this bliss. I haven't dared to try on my jeans during my whole vacation... and I'm not planning to, until I'm back on track again.

Koska olen koko lomani viettänyt kotona, päätin antaa kodille vähän jotain takaisin. Yhtäkkiä, silkasta päähänpistosta ryhdyin eilen keittiöremonttiin. Siinä vierähtää päivä jos toinenkin, tai kenties viikko jos homma lähtee käsistä. Pelkäänpä, että mansikoita on nyt vain vatsani pohjalla - ei enää kaapistoissa. Toivottavasti koti tykkää uudesta!

Because I've spent my whole vacation at home, I decided to give something back. Yesterday I started a kitchen makeover, just like that. It's going to take a day or two, unless it gets out of control and I have to fix the other rooms, too. I'm afraid the only strawberries now are in the bottom of my tummy, and no longer on the cabinet doors. I hope our home likes the improvement!

Oli pakko tulla muistuttamaan aurinkovoiteen tärkeydestä. Täältä huutelee eräs punanahka, joka eilen ajatteli, ettei pilvisellä säällä voi polttaa itseään. 50km pyöräily ilman suojakertoimia todisti toisin. Aurinkoa näkyi ehkä parinkymmenen minuutin ajan, silti on olo kuin keitetyllä ravulla. Pitäkää siis huolta itsestänne.

Olemme mieheni kanssa hullaantuneet Kreikkaan; niin sen saaristojen letkeään elämään, ystävällisiin ihmisiin, kuin herkulliseen ruokaankin. Ruoka tehdään aina alkuperäisistä raaka-aineista, eikä puolivalmisteista - ja sen valmistamiseen käytetään paljon aikaa, usein yhdessä koko perheen kanssa. Tänään miehen ollessa töissä kokkasin täytettyjä paprikoita ja tomaatteja kirjastosta lainaamani ruokakirjan ohjeen mukaan. Ai miten hyvää! Tässäpä teille ohje, joka vie kielen mennessään.

For once I have enough time to cook the kind of meals I can only dream of in my busy everyday life. My husband and I are crazy about Greece; the beautiful islands, friendly people and delicious food. Greek meals are always made of fresh ingredients instead of canned ones - and Greek people use a lot of time to prepare their dinners, usually with the whole family participating. Today, while my husband was at work, I made a traditional Greek meal with red peppers and tomatoes. I found the recipe in a book I got from the library and I thought it would be fun to share it with you.

TÄYTETYT PAPRIKAT JA TOMAATIT, 4 ANNOSTA

Huuhdo 4 paprikaa ja 4 pihvitomaattia, leikkaa kaikista "kannet" irti. Puhdista paprikat, koverra ontoksi. Koverra tomaattien sisukset lusikalla ja ota talteen. Ripottele kaikkien sisään suolaa ja pippuria, tomaatteihin lisäksi hieman sokeria.

FILLED TOMATOES AND RED PEPPERS, 4 PORTIONS

Rinse 4 red peppers and 4 big tomatoes, cut the tops off each one. Clean the peppers, cave them empty. Do the same with the tomatoes, but save the contents. Sprinkle a little salt and pepper into all - also sprinkle a bit of sugar into the tomatoes.

Laita 80g riisiä kuppiin, päälle vettä niin että peittyvät. Anna turvota 15min. Kuori ja pilko 1 iso sipuli. Kuumenna pannulla oliiviöljyä, lisää sipulit. Lisää 300g jauhelihaa, ruskista. Muhenna tomaattien sisus ja sekoita joukkoon. Mausta suolalla ja pippurilla. Valuta riisit, lisää joukkoon. Lisää vielä 1,25dl vettä, kypsytä miedolla lämmöllä n.10min kannen alla.

Put 80g of rice into a cup, add enough water to just cover them. Let the rice stay for 15 minutes. Peel and chop a big onion. Heat a frying pan, add some olive oil and the chopped onion. Add 300g of minced meat, fry until brown. Add the mashed tomato contents and some salt and pepper. Poor the water off the rice, add the rice into the pan. Add 1,25dl water, cook the mixture for about 10 minutes under the lid.

Säädä uuni 180 asteeseen. Hienonna puoli nippua persiljaa ja 2 tuoretta mintun oksaa (voit käyttää myös kuivattua). Sekoita riisin ja jauhelihan joukkoon. Täytä paprikat ja tomaatit seoksella, laita kannet päälle, lado voideltuun vuokaan vieri viereen. Pese tai kuori 400g perunoita ja leikkaa lohkoiksi. Asettele lohkot tomaattien ja paprikoiden väliin.

Set the oven for 180 degrees Celcius. Chop some fresh parsley and mint (or use dried ones). Add them to the rice-minced meat mixture. Fill the peppers and tomatoes with the mixture, put the tops back on, set them into an oiled oven tray next to each other. Wash or peel 400g of potatoes and cut into nice chunks. Add the potato chunks to the tray, between the tomatoes and peppers.

Sekoita keskenään 4rkl oliiviöljyä, 3rkl tomaattipyrettä (tai ketsuppia) ja 2,5dl kiehuvaa vettä. Kaada seos kasvisten päälle. Kypsennä uunissa noin tunnin ajan. Tarjoa punasipulisalaatin ja sitruunaviipaleen kera. Herkuttele!

Stir together 4 tablespoons of olive oil, 3 tablespoons of tomato purée (or ketchup) and 2,5dl boiling water. Poor over the vegetables. Cook in the oven for about an hour. Serve with red onion salad and a slice of lemon. Bon appétit!

On kai olemassa yhtä monta tapaa viettää juhannusta, kuin on suomalaisiakin. Yhteisiä nimittäjiä lähes kaikille taitavat olla juhannuskoivut, sauna, ruoka ja juoma, hassuttelu, sekä toive hyvästä säästä. Jos meillä olisi oma kesämökki, viettäisimme takuuvarmasti juhannukset siellä luonnon rauhassa; uiden, kalastaen, hyttysiä huitoen ja hiljaisuutta kuunnellen. Mökittömänä kuitenkin juhannukseemme ovat jo vuosien ajan kuuluneet ystävät, pyöräily, erilaiset pelit, grillaus ja hauskuus. Ja ehdottomasti aamuun asti valvominen, ainakin yhtenä yönä. Täytyyhän se "virallinen" yötön yö kokea edes kerran vuodessa!

Tänä vuonna olimme juhannuksen kotona. Aurinkoa ei juurikaan nähty ja vettä ripsi vähän väliä, joten pyöräilystä ja perinteisistä rantalentismatseista luovuttiin. Sen sijaan kyllä saunottiin, heitettiin tikkaa, grillattiin, maisteltiin viiniä, lakattiin kynnet pinkiksi, nähtiin useita ystäviä, naurettiin, kuunneltiin musiikkia, tanssittiin ja laulettiinkin, mietittiin elämää, pohdittiin tulevaisuutta, oltiin iloisia ja valvottiin aamukuuteen. Melkein koko ajan olimme ulkona; kun yö viileni, haettiin vain viltit ja tilkkutäkit lämmikkeeksi. Tällä jaksan vielä viisi työpäivää!

I suppose there are as many ways to celebrate Midsummer in Finland as there are Finns. Midsummer, or juhannus as we call it, nearly always includes the sauna, setting up small birch trees on the yard, being a bit goofier than usual, good food and beverages, and a hope of fine weather. If we had our own summer cottage we would most definitely spend our juhannus there; swimming, fishing, killing mosquitos and listening to silence. As the cottage is yet in our dreams, for the past few years our juhannus has been all about friends, biking, playing different kinds of games, barbecuing and having fun. And for sure staying up until the morning, at least for one night. You just have to experience the official "nightless night" at least once a year! (And I do mean it doesn't get dark at all during summer nights here up North close to the Arctic Circle.)

This year we spent juhannus at home. We hardly saw the sun and the rain was a frequent visitor so we gave up on biking and our traditional beach volley game. Instead we did have a sauna, played a few games of darts, barbecued, had some wine, painted our nails pink, saw several friends, laughed, listened to music, even sang and danced, thought of life, planned for future, felt happy and stayed up until six in the morning. We were outside practically through the whole weekend; when it got chilly we just brought out some quilts and blankets. With these new memories I can definitely manage five more days at work!

Pianonsoittaja matolla - To play or not to play

Nuorempana opiskelin pianonsoittoa musiikkiopistossa vuosia. Olin hyvä siinä, mutta inhosin soittotunteja. Vielä niitäkin enemmän inhosin joka lukuvuoteen kuuluvia konsertteja, joihin meitä soittajia valmisteltiin viikkoja. Olin ujo lapsi ja esiintyminen ahdisti. Kun kasvoin tarpeeksi isoksi ja tulin tarpeeksi itsepäiseksi, ilmoitin uhmakkaasti äidille, etten aio enää jatkaa. Se oli suuri helpotus.

Silti opistoaikoihin mahtuu paljon hyviä muistoja. Yksi opettajistani oli vanha hollantilainen pappa, joka kirjoitti taiteellisilla tikkukirjaimilla, oli aina hyväntuulinen ja tarjosi joka tunnilla pastilleja. Muistan myös onnistumisen tunteen, kun selvisin konsertissa 14-sivuisen kappaleen läpi virheittä. Muistan, kuinka hymyilin punastuneena, kun puolalainen naisopettaja muiskautti punatuilla huulillaan suukon poskelleni.

Yhä edelleen nähdessäni pianon - oli se sitten missä tahansa, joudun vastustamaan kiusausta mennä soittelemaan tuttuja säveliä. Sormeni eivät ole enää yhtä sukkelat; usein töissä pysähdyn, katson tarkkaan käsiäni ja sanon: venäläisopettajani olisi kauhuissaan tämän soittajan sormista. Silti kuin ihmeen kautta ne löytävät tiensä oikeille paikoille ja tuottavat ääntä, jota toiset vihaavat ja toiset niin syvästi rakastavat. Minä kuulun jälkimmäisiin.

When I was younger I studied piano in a conservatory for years. I was good at it but I hated the piano lessons. Even more I hated the concerts us players had to take part of, they prepared us for them for weeks. I was a shy kid and performing in front of an audience was terrifying. When I grew older and became stubbourn enough, I strongly told my Mum I would quit. It was a big relief.

Yet, I have many lovely memories of my studies. One of my teachers was the sweetest old Dutch man who had the most artistic handwriting, and who always offered treats on every lesson. I remember the feeling of success as I played through 14 pages of music in a concert without a single mistake. I remember smiling and blushing when a Polish teacher gave me a kiss on the cheek with her shiny red lips.

Even today I have to force myself not to go and play whenever I see a piano somewhere. My fingers are not as quick as they used to be; sometimes at work I stop to look at my hands and think "my Russian piano teacher would be horrified". Miraculously, though, they still find their way to the right keys and play the sounds some people can't stand, some love so dearly. I belong to the latter.

Joskus on pakko ottaa muutama askel taaksepäin. Nyt tuntuu siltä, että tarvitsen jälleen oikeat otsikot. Kuviakin aion vähän muuttaa, jos vain osaan käyttää blogin uusia asetuksia haluamallani tavalla. Kiljaiskaa vaan reilusti, jos näyttää huonommalta.

Tämän aamun kävelyllä ei näyttänyt huonolta. Tiedän maininneeni ennenkin, että rakastan hurjan aikaisia lenkkejä kaikkien muiden vielä nukkuessa. Kun vielä katsoo kotikaupunkiaan kameran linssin läpi, näyttää kaikki yhtäkkiä ihan erilaiselta. Täällä minä asun - ja toivon ehtiväni esitellä paikkaa teille kesän aikana enemmänkin.

Sometimes it's mandatory to take a few steps back. I seem to need proper headlines again, although I'm not sure if I want to translate them all to English. I'm going to change the photos a bit, too - if I will learn how to use the new blog settings. Just give me a shout if it looks worse than it used to.

My walk this morning wasn't bad or worse in any way. I know I've mentioned this before but I just love walking around really early when everyone else is asleep. And when you look at your hometown through the camera lense, it suddenly looks so different. This is where I live, and I hope during summer I'll have time to show you more of it.

Vasta pari vuotta sitten opin Suomessa olevan yhdistyksiä, jotka tukevat rahallisesti esimerkiksi vanhusten ja lapsiperheiden lomia. Toki olin itse erittäin tietoinen siitä, että onnistunut loma on yksi avaintekijöistä stressin poistamisessa ja akkujen lataamisessa arkea varten. Mutta että joku virallinen taho arvostaisi lomaa - jopa niin paljon, että on valmis lahjoittamaan sellaisen jollekin! Se oli minulle positiivinen yllätys.

Tänään sain kummitytöltäni puhelun töihin.
- Arvaa missä mää oon? Hotellissa! Meillä on oma huone ja TV ja suihku ja vessa, ja hotelliaamupala!
- Mää oon niin ilonen tästä päivästä! Ku mulla on täällä uusia kavereita joilla on koira, ja sain taluttaa sitä yks ja puoli kilometriä! Se kyllä veti aika paljon remmissä.
- Siellä oli puuroa, leipää, vihanneksia, niin ja keksejä, ja pekonia ja prinssinnakkeja. Tiiätkö mikä on vähä tylsää? Ku näkee jotain mikä ois tosi herkullista mutta sitte siinä onki laktoosia niin mää en voi syödä. Ja päivälliseksi meillä oli - mitäs meillä olikaan...
- Tänään me käytiin kävelyretkellä, ja siellä paikassa oli kakskytkolmevuotias kissa! Se oli niin vanha että pelkäsin että siihen käy kipiää, ku jotku ei osannu nostaa sitä oikein.
- No en mää vielä oo käyny meressä uimassa, mutta ehkä ylihuomenna sitte ku on lämmintä. Täällä on semmonen ranta jossa on pitkospuita, niin sielä on helppo käydä lenkillä.
- Joo, me tultiin eilen ja ollaan lauantaihin asti!

Taisin hymyillä niin, että poskiin sattui.

It was only a couple of years ago that I learned there are associations in Finland that sponsor vacations, for example for the elderly or families with children. Of course I was aware that a successful holiday is a key element in removing stress and charging your batteries for the everyday life. But to find out there are official corporations that appreciate vacation - even so much that they are willing to donate one to strangers! That was a pleasant surprise.

Today I got a phonecall from my goddaughter.
- Guess where I am? I'm on vacation, I'm in a hotel! We have our own room and a TV, and a shower and a toilet and a great hotel breakfast!
- I'm so happy for this day! I've made new friends here and they have a dog, and I got to walk their dog by myself for at least a mile! He did pull on his leash a lot, though.
- There were porridge, bread, veggies, oh yeah and cookies, and bacon and little sausages. You know what's a little annoying? When I see something really delicious and then there's lactose in it and I can't eat it. And for dinner we had - ummm, what did we have...
- Today they took us for a walk and they had a twenty-three year old cat there! He was so old I was afraid they might hurt him, some kids didn't know how to hold him right.
- Well I haven't been swimming in the sea yet, maybe the day after tomorrow 'cause it's supposed to be warm then. There are these paths on the beach so it's really easy to go for a walk.
- Yeah, we arrived yesterday and we're gonna stay until Saturday!

I smiled so much my cheeks hurt.

Viikon ajan on nautittu huikeasta kesän lämmöstä, joskaan se ei töissä tunnu niin kovin mukavalta. Onneksi iltapäivisin on ollut aikaa viettää hetkiä auringossa. Eilen tuntui jo melkein lomalta, eikä sitä varten tarvinnut edes lähteä kotoa. Talviturkkikin on nyt heitetty!

We've been lucky to have extremely sunny and warm days this week - although at work they feel less than nice. Fortunately I've had a few hours every afternoon to just hang out in the sun. Yesterday already felt like vacation and we didn't even have to leave home. Oh, and the first dip into the lake this summer is now officially done!

Tänään hyvin moni oli pukeutunut pukuun tai mekkoon ja kävi juhlimassa valmistujaisia. Minä olin pukeutunut shortseihin ja toppiin, ja tein maalausremppaa. Tämän illan viihdyn työtä tehden - onneksi kotoa käsin. Enää neljä viikkoa kesälomaan!

Today most people were wearing dresses and suits and going to graduation parties. I was wearing shorts and a sleeveless top, and having a home improvement. I will spend the evening working - fortunately at home. Four more weeks to my summer holiday!

Mökkeilen mielelläni myös siksi, että siellä todella tuntee olevansa keskellä luontoa. On mukavaa, että koiratkin saavat juosta vapaana ja nautiskella elämästä sen sijaan, että joutuisivat kulkemaan remmissä pitkin kaupungin katuja. Sattumalta löysimme pari linnunpesää aivan mökin läheisyydestä. Ei sellaisia näe kotipihassa!

One of the reasons I like spending time at summer cottages is that you really feel close to the nature there. It's a nice change for the dogs as well - running around free instead of just having to take walks on a leash on the town streets. By accindent we found two birds' nests very close to the cottage. That's not something you would see in your backyard at home!

Päivälleen seitsemän vuotta sitten menin naimisiin elämäni miehen kanssa. Seitsemän vuotta sitä ennen alkoi yhteinen elämämme. Toivon, että olen hänelle (ja täälläkin) osannut kertoa mitä hän minulle merkitsee.

Tänä vuonna järjestin yllätyksen. Vuokrasin salaa viikonlopuksi mökin järven rannalta, ja kerroin hänelle vasta lähtöaamuna. Yllätys jatkui, kun samana iltana paikalle saapui myös kaksi ystäväämme. Vaikka säät ovat olleet arvaamattomat, on ajatus tärkein. Olen onnellinen, eikä millään muulla ole väliä.

Seven years ago to this day I married the man I love. Seven years before that we began our life together. I hope I have made it clear to him (and to all of you) what he means to me.

This year I planned a surprise. I secretly rented a summer cottage by a lake, and only told him about it when we were leaving. The surprise went on as two of our friends arrived later that night. Although the weather has been unpredictable, it's the thought that counts. I am happy - and nothing else matters.

Maatilalla on aina tekemistä. Tuskin yhtenäkään päivänä voi sanoa, että on tylsää. Mekin pääsimme ottamaan osaa tilan töihin; pystytimme pellon ympäri aitauksen hevosille. Sanonpahan vain, että kunnon fyysinen työ pitäisi ottaa takaisin nykyihmisen jokapäiväiseen arkeen. Siitä tulee hyvä olo!

Loppupäivä sujui heinikossa muurahaisten seassa istuen, auringossa paistatellen, kylmää juomaa nauttien ja hevosten innolle naureskellen. Jos joku väittää tietävänsä paremman tavan viettää lauantaita, otan kyllä ehdotuksia vastaan!

There is always something to do when you live on a farm. I can't imagine how one could ever get bored there. We had a chance to participate by setting up a fence around a field for the horses. Let me just say I truly think it would be marvelous to do actual physical labour every day. It makes you feel great!

The rest of the day included laying in the hay field (with a bunch of ants), getting some sun, enjoying cold beverages and laughing at the silly horses playing in their brand new yard. I dare you to tell me a better way of spending a Saturday!

Takana täydellinen viikonloppu ystävien luona. He hankkivat vastikään vanhan maatilan luonnon keskeltä ja viettävät melkein prikulleen sellaista elämää, josta itse haaveilen. Parempaa kasvuympäristöä lapsille en pysty kuvittelemaan, saati antoisampaa sielunkotia aikuiselle.

Tuntuu niin uskomattomalta ettei kukaan muu halunnut tätä paikkaa, me oltiin ainoita.

Ihmisiltä on menny kyky nähdä mitä mahdollisuuksia tällasessa on, pelätään vaan sen työn määrää.

Onneksi on vielä niitä, jotka haluavat, ja jotka näkevät.

We were invited to our friends' beautiful home for the weekend. They recently bought an old farm in the middle of the nature, and are now living the kind of life I am dreaming of. It's hard to imagine a better environment for children to grow up in, nor a better place for an adult to feed their body, mind and soul.

It felt unreal that we were the only ones who wanted this place.

People have lost their ability to see the possibilities in these kind of things, they only look at the amount of work that has to be done to get there.

I'm glad there still are those few who want and who truly see.

Luulen, että kroppani yrittää kertoa minulle jotain, mutten saa selvää. Yritän pitää siitä huolta; silti viimeiset pari viikkoa olen napannut jokaisen liikkeellä olevan viruksen kiduksiini. Ehkä niitä vaaditaan, jotta saadaan kaikki se pöly karistettua. Ja sadetta, sitä kaipaisin! Vaikka on jo kovin lämmin, vihreää räjähdystä ei tule ennen kuin saadaan vettä.

Kamerakin pysyy nyt hyllyllä, kipeänä en jaksa. Puen vain lisää vaatetta ylle.

I think my body is trying to tell me something but I can't figure out what it is. I try to take good care of it, yet for the last couple of weeks I've managed to catch every single virus that's been going on around here. Maybe that's what it takes to clear off that dust I was talking about. And rain, we could really use some rain! Even though it's very warm already, there won't be a green explosion before the nature gets a good splash of water.

Even my camera is now stuck in the closet, I'm too ill to think about it. Now where is that extra sweater of mine?

Myydäänköhän jossain tuulettimia, jotka voi asentaa korvasta sisään ja joilla saa pään mukavasti ilmastoitua talven jäljiltä? Niin vaikealta tuntuu päästä sanalliseen vauhtiin, vaikka aurinko ja lämpö muuten niin piristävätkin pimeän runtelemaa ruumista. Sovitaanko, etten yritä väkisin, vaan annan ajatusten tulla omalla tahdillaan. Teidän kaikkien uutisia kyllä olen lukenut mielelläni!

I wonder if there is an apparatus I could hook into my ear that would clear off all the dust inside my head, after several months of darkness? It seems so hard to make the words flow again, even though the sun is finally pampering our winter-worn bodies. Let's make a deal; I won't try and force it, I'll just wait for the writer's block to disappear on it's own. I have been following all of your stories with much enthusiasm, though!

Kumman hiljaista täällä. Aikaa olisi ollut, muttei sanottavaa. Harmaus on saanut jäädä kuvaamattakin. Lumi on melkein poissa, mutta värit eivät vielä ole löytäneet paikkaansa. Se suuri muutos, josta haaveilin, ei toteudu. Liian suuria taloudellisia riskejä, joita en ollut halukas ottamaan. Ihme kyllä olen silti rauhallisin mielin. Ei valtavaa pettymyksen, eikä epätoivon tunnetta. Niiden sijaan merkillinen nykyisen tilanteen hyväksyntä. Haaveiden ja todellisten päämäärien luominen ja sekoittaminen yhdessä miehen kanssa. Hyvä olo. Toivottavasti sinullakin.

Awfully quiet here. I would have had time but nothing to say, nor to shoot. The lack of colors seems not worthy of photographing. The snow is almost gone but it still takes a while 'til the spring gets here. The big change I was so anxiously planning for is not going to happen. There were too many financial risks I wasn't willing to take. I'm surprisingly calm, though. No overwhelming feelings of disappointment or despair. Instead a strange sence of acceptance. Creating new goals and mixing them with dreams together with my husband. Feeling alright. I hope you are, too.
